Places on our doorstep - Diamond Wood

As a family we love going for walks, exploring and looking for nature. Living in Sutton Bonington we are lucky enough to have a place that offers all of this, right on our doorstep.

Located towards the bottom of Pasture Lane, past fields where cattle graze, is Diamond Wood.  A 60 acre woodland that was created by the Woodland Trust in partnership with The University of Nottingham in 2012.

It is one of 60 exclusive Diamond Woods across the UK, that were commisioned to mark Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee.  With approximately 6 million trees planted throughout these woods.

The woodlands have been designed to create a living, breathing space for people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.

There are lots of things to explore. A lovely pond area where, if you sit still for long enough, you can see swallows swooping down to the surface of the water to catch flies. Lots of beautiful wild flowers, where you can see bees busily looking for pollen and an abundance of butterflies fluttering around looking for somewhere to bask in the warm sunshine. Long grassland areas where, if you look carefully, you might just spot a little frog!!

Since it's inception in 2012 additions have been made in the form of useful information boards and skilfully crafted seats made from tree trunks.

The woodland is situated in a beautiful spot by the River Soar and it's lovely to be able to take a stroll along the water. You are then able to walk back into the village through The Spinney, where George likes hunting for the Gruffalo, and across the playing field.

It's exciting to think of how this area is going to look over time and I'm sure my little nature detectives will continue to enjoy exploring the area for years to come.

Until next time.
